I grew up on a small, traditionally run, family farm out on the Lincolnshire Marsh. My Grandad still spoke N. Lincolnshire dialect and had a wonderful stock of orally transmitted stories which I loved listening to by the front kitchen fire in my grandparents' farmhouse. I loved music theatre growing up and made quite a large number of music theatre pieces. I continue to write quite a lot of songs, and these often form the starting point of stories and sometimes feature in them. For me writing and reading are forms of performance and I see my novels and short stories as performance pieces which come to life when they are read. I love writing which is part of Queer Ecology, whether theoretical pieces or poetry and novels which 'queer nature'. A couple of my favourites are 'Kiss of the Fur Queen' by Tomson Highway and 'Crime Against Nature' by Minnie Bruce Pratt. I write stories which explore local cultures (especially my own lost local small farming culture out on the Lincolnshire Marsh), queer romance, and the whole more than human world through a queer lens.
